Born at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, Usama Mukwaya has ancestral roots in the Ganda, Ankole, and Rwandan communities. He is the son of Abdullah Mukwaya and Aziidah Mariam.

Usama began his early education at Saidat Aisha Nursery School and later at Buraaq Infants School, both in Bwaise. He then transferred to Victoria Christian School in Ndeeba before completing his primary education at Linnet Primary School in Nabweru, Wakiso District. In 2012, he joined Shuhada’e Islamic Secondary School in Mbarara for his O-Level education and later earned his Advanced Certificate of Education from Nyamitanga Secondary School, also in Mbarara.
He studied Cisco Career Certifications in Networking and LAN/WAN Management under the Faculty of Information Technology at Makerere University in 2008. He also holds a diploma in screenwriting and directing from the Mariam Ndagire Film and Performing Arts Centre (MNFPAC), and studied screenwriting and directing at the Maisha Film Lab in 2011.
Usama’s film credits include Bala Bala Sese (2015), Rehema (2017), Love Faces (2018), The Blind Date (2021), Sixteen Rounds (2021), The Passenger (2023), Nambi (2023), and his most recent work, Call 112 (2025). He has also worked on television shows such as Kyaddala (since 2019), Sanyu S1 (2021), and Damalie S1 (2023).
Usama is the founder of O Studios Entertainment Ltd., a multimedia production company behind several successful local and international films. He has served as General Secretary and Treasurer of the Screenwriters Guild under the Uganda Film Network. He is also a founding member of the Pearl International Film Festival, where he later became the festival’s programmer for its 7th, 8th, and 9th editions.
A recipient of the Young Achievers Award in the film and television category, Usama served as chief content officer for Stream Afrique from 2018 to 2022, a subscription-based streaming platform that offers online streaming of majorly African content. As of October 2024, Usama has been serving as the Director of Operations at the IKON Inspire Foundation.
He is an executive member of the Uganda Film Network and a 2019 fellow of the LéO Africa Institute’s Young Emerging Leaders Project.
Usama is also credited as the producer of the 2023, 2024, and 2025 IKON Awards, with the 2023 edition marking his first “live” television production.
