‘Sixteen Rounds’, directed by Ugandan filmmaker Loukman Ali and produced by Usama Mukwaya, was last night named the Best African Short film at the Durban International Film Festival 2022.

The gritty film, which features notable Ugandan actors like Micheal Wawuyo Jr., Natasha Sinayobye, Aganza Prince, Jack Sserunkuma, Patriq Nkakalukanyi and Raymond Rushabiro — is based on an angry former soldier trying to revenge on his wife for cheating on him.

The 37-minute film in 2021 nabbed an award in the same category at the Mashariki African Film Festival and has previously been nominated in the 2022 Luxor African Film Festival and Uganda Film Festival Awards. For both festivals, the nominations were under the same category.

The festival, which was being hosted for the forty-third time, ran from July 21-30.

It was started to create a platform for intellectual and creative dialogue to start conversations “that spark innovation and question the world we live in and the lenses through which history is portrayed during a time of conflict and extreme racial tensions,” according to the organization’s website.

Over 72 films were nominated for this year’s festival’.
